After spending last Saturday and yesterday at the Jazz Gallery, we are 95% ready to go. I'm pretty proud of the group of artists and body of work that we are showing. Every year just seems to get better and better. And I'm learning new things along the way. For example: every year we have tried a "theme" or "challenge" if you will, and as it turns out, most of you WON'T. Maybe it's enough of a theme to just be "Fiber Art"? I'm beginning to suspect so.
Another thing I learned, from the very first year, is that fiber artists are an elusive bunch. It's like pulling teeth to get some of you to show your work. I think that as a group, maybe we have a hard time labeling what we do as Art? With a capital A. Maybe it's a hard transition from the world of traditional and functional into the land of Art? I'm not really sure what makes us so shy of putting ourselves out there. My husband recently called me an artist and I actually balked at the term. I said "i'm crafty, i'm not an artist". His reply to me was "That's only because your view of art is so narrow." Ouch. Double ouch because he's right. Maybe we all need to expand our ideas of what art is.
Well, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow night. It should be a fun evening. And please, if anyone ever has suggestions for the show, ways to proceed, things we should be doing differently or new things to implement, I want to hear them. This show is for all of us and I want to continue to grow it as best we can.
